It’s that time again. It not uncommon for a story or novel to open with dialog, and it can be very effective for dropping the reader into the middle of the action. Even if you chose to not open with one of these dialog pieces, one might at least inspire a conversation between two characters. Have at it!
- “You think that’ll stop me?”
- “I know I’m late, but here I am.”
- “Well, aren’t you a pretty little thing.”
- “Seriously, I’m not above begging.”
- “My doctor told me I couldn’t do that.”
- “Please tell me you read the instructions.”
- “I wish you’d shut up.”
- “I’ll tell you what really happened.”
Happy writing!
Dean, you never cease to amaze. I thought maybe I’d have you stumped with this one, but as usual, you come through. Hilarious and well done.
This post is the highlight of my weekly routine . . .such is the life of a writer!
“I know I’m late, but here I am,” Sally said as she watched Ed set the tumbler of amber liquid down on the bar. “Well, aren’t you a pretty little thing,” Ed replied, tipping up the brim of his 10-gallon cowboy hat. Sally leaned near him. “Please tell me you read the instructions I sent you?” she asked. Not waiting for his reply, she turned and ordered herself a whiskey from the barkeep. Ed cleared his throat. “My doctor told me I couldn’t do that.” He avoided meeting her gaze. “You think that’ll stop me?” Sally laughed and tossed the whiskey down her throat. “I tell you what happened,” Ed continued, “because seriously, I’m not above begging.” He reached for her arm that rested on the bar. Sally jerked it free and slapped him across the face. “I wish you’d shut up and follow me upstairs.” Her dress draped off her left shoulder as she walked toward the staircase, Ed following two steps behind like a well trained puppy.
